Where does your money go?
Over the year up to August 2024 we received roughly £54,000 in donations. 40% from regular giving, 35% from fundraising events and 25% from one off donations and sponsored events. (see the chart below).
Our fundraising events included a pig racing evening, a murder mystery dinner and a some musical events. We also had a very successful gym marathon by two of our Trustees along with wonderful support from Torquay Girls Grammar School and income from collection boxes at the Whistlestop Café and Ashleigh Road Post Office.
How did we spend your money?
This chart shows how your money was spent.
- We spent about £17,000 (40%) on food and the basic needs of the 300 students.
- We contributed just under a further £7,500 (18%) towards the schools running costs
- Essential fees to the government (5%) and for examinations (17%) accounted for a further £9,300.
- We look after the students health as well as their education. Health care is not free so if our students need treatment, and many do, we make sure they get it. Our medical costs for the year were just over £3,000 (8%)
- Then as you can see about £4,500 (11.5%) was spent buying new beds, textbooks, some upkeep to the buildings and keeping the school’s vehicle on the road.
At the end of the year we carried over about £10,000. Much of this money was donated for agricultural projects. We used to grow crops which reduced the weekly food spend. This had to be stopped as we were losing too much from organised theft. Thanks to a couple of generous grants we have completed a security fence and hope to restart these projects soon.
All our trustees and contributors work for free so the charity’s running costs are exceptionally low, just £750 for the year.
The Challenges facing us
Although the carry over looks good, at the time of writing (January 2026) our unrestricted funds are down to just £501! The Kenyan government has brought in a new curriculum which is proving expensive to implement. Classrooms will need computers, new books, whiteboards and materials. At the moment we struggle to even have electricity throughout the day! Most of the pupils stay on the campus and many stay with us over the holidays. Our sleeping and washing facilities are in urgent need of improvement. A few of our classrooms are still needing a roof. So we urgently need to boost donations
Can you help?
A regular donation of £25 a month provides for 1 student. We need beds and mattresses to improve the pupils living conditions. A donation of £20 would pay for a mattress or £80 would enable us to buy a metal bunk bed. These are just examples. Your donations would go into the general fund as we never know where the money might need to be spent. For example in 2025 one of our pupils developed cancer and unfortunately needed an amputation. We paid for all her treatment, as we do for all our students.
